Villa Gökçe

Fethiye, Turkey
Sleeps 8 / 4 bedrooms
€9,000 - €14,500 per week

Arising majestically from the landscape, like the mighty prow of a ship, Gökçe is without exaggeration, one of the most imaginatively designed and stylish houses in this part of the Mediterranean.

The imposing façade is a breath-taking architectural vision of glass, steel, stone and wood, that has been designed to sit imposingly yet easily in the imaginatively landscaped grounds and to make the most of the jaw-droppingly beautiful coastline panoramas.

Every feature of Gökçe has been carefully chosen to reflect the skills of Turkey's finest craftsmen and each element has been sourced to leave the minimum impact on the environment. For example, the house has been built from stones sourced from the fields and deserted old houses of Alaçatı, near Izmir.

The centrepiece of the garden is a massive lake-style pool with a mosaic shelved "beach" area, which contains a huge granite boulder, deftly carved to form a natural jet-tub. This swimming pool, which can only be described as a work of art, also has a separate roomy spa-pool decorated with pebbles collected from the Gökçe Gemile coves and beaches.

There are also several shady seating areas, a hammock and a stunning stone table for alfresco dining, but together with the swimming pool, perhaps the other most impressive feature of the garden is the "hidden" Guest House. On the inside there is sleeping accommodation and an open plan living and kitchen area, ideal for more independent teenage members of the family, guests, or staff. On the top of the guest house there is a wonderfully furnished pergola. We believe that relaxing on the ottoman style sofa, or on one of the chairs, is the best way to enjoy the tranquillity of Gökçe and the phenomenal views of the bay.

Just like the scenery that surrounds it, the phrase that best sum up the interior of Gökçe, is grandeur on an impressive scale. The extensive, airy living and dining area pushes the boundaries of glamour, aesthetics and exquisite craftsmanship to new heights.

The land at Gökçe Gemile has long been home to a multitude of mature and productive carob trees, which are so productive we harvest the carob beans annually and make flour from them, from which we make biscuits, cakes and bread. We will be delighted if you wish to taste these goodies.

As we soon became very fond of these carob trees, we were determined to leave them undisturbed and make them an integral part of Gökçe Gemile. As a result, one of the many remarkable features of Gökçe Villa is the presence of a living carob tree, which adds yet another unique high note to the concept of bringing nature indoors.

Another highlight is the streamlined fitted kitchen, which combines elegance with functional understatement. Here, there is every facility required for family dining or entertaining on a more lavish scale.

On the first floor, accessed by an open-tread timber and iron staircase, there are two superlative master suites, both of which have en-suite dressing and shower rooms. The windows open onto French balconies and breath taking views of the splendid pool and manicured gardens with vistas of the sea, forest and coastline beyond.

Leading off the gallery, there is a large balcony, with a seating area perfect for relaxing, while contemplating the views of the swimming pool, gardens, forest and astonishingly blue sea beyond.

On the ground floor there is a spacious twin bedded room with an adjoining shower room, which also serves as a guest cloakroom.
  • Living/dining area: A beautiful oak table and bench seating, and a floor of exquisitely laid volcanic basalt slabs are just two of the impressive features in this double aspect double-height dining area. Basalt has also been used to create the pure lines of the open fireplace. Leading to the galleried landing on the first floor there is a magnificent open timber staircase that serves the two master bedrooms and overlooks the piece de resistance, a living carob tree. One of the many other masterpieces in this splendid open space is the gabled cedar and chestnut wood ceiling from which are suspended imposing individually crafted wood and wrought iron chandeliers, which lends a cool, almost ecclesiastical ambience.

  • Kitchen: The sleek uber-chic lines of the contemporary kitchen offer a delightful contrast with the organic qualities of the rest of the house. With every facility and gadget necessary for easy living, guests are able to self-cater or relax while the GG team of women cook delicious traditional Turkish style meals for them. For foodie guests, they are more than happy to share some of their culinary secrets!

  • Master suite (north): With its barrel-vaulted wooden ceiling and polished timber floor, this beautifully proportioned bedroom is a tour de force of imagination and craftsmanship. But it also has many other original features that are equally as impressive. These include a super king-size (2m x 2m) bed and two bedside tables cut from angel white marble stone, all of which are suspended, as if by magic, from a wall crafted from hand-made cubes of chestnut wood. The double aspect room has sliding windows to the front opening onto a French balcony, with views of the garden, pool, sea and wooded coastline beyond, and a picture window to the side overlooking the forested hillside. The dressing area with its impressive wardrobes, leads into the shower room, which by contrast has panels of smooth washed pebbles, a double size basin fashioned from a single piece of angel white marble stone and a separate wc and monsoon shower.
  • Master suite (south): Architecturally, this master suite is a mirror image of the north-facing master suite but with subtle variations in terms of design. In this room, the super king-size (2m x 2m) bed and bedside tables are made from seasoned chestnut, and again, they magically suspended from a wooden wall constructed from huge chestnut timbers. The views of Gökçe Gemile bay from this room are without doubt the most exceptional and romantic panoramas anywhere in the Mediterranean. The extraordinary style and design continue into the shower room with the double sized basin, carved from a single piece of Kayseri basalt, which sits atop sturdy chestnut wood supports.
  • Twin bedded room: On the ground floor there is a large, cool and airy twin-bedded room with fitted wardrobes and north-facing views over the garden and forest.
  • Shower room and guest cloakroom: The ground floor bedroom has an adjoining shower-room, which also serves as a guest cloakroom. It may be the smallest room in the house but even this will cause wondrous gasps. The pebbled walls and granite floors, separated by more pebbles, and the hugeslabs of Elmalı marble used to line the shower room walls are only outshone by the wash basin, which is artistically hewn from a column of Aliaga prismatic basalt!
  • Pool house: The double bedroom, shower room and open plan living area that incorporates a kitchen, can be used to provide comfortable and self-contained accommodation for teenagers, friends or nannies. The most unusual feature of the pool house is its ecological design. The subterranean side wall is a natural way of insulating the building and helps to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. The grassy slope leads onto a roof terrace with an elegant pergola, under which is ottoman style seating and a massive table hewn from the trunk of an oak tree.
